Homely-Heartstopper.

By Sunishka

We are back again on Queersay with a show that paused our heartbeats when it came out(of the closet). And for book lovers the show is based on a five volume book series(6th incoming!). Let's dive into Heartstopper because how could you not feel that fuzzy warm feeling with those adorable animation effects and screams great queer representation. The show starts out with Charlie, a shy teen boy who falls head over heels for Nick Nelson, the new muscular boy on the rugby team. Basically the straightest guy ever right? Nick discovers he has feelings for Charlie and comes out as bisexual with his beaming smile and Golden Retriever energy which is to die for. Another abso-freakin-lutely unique thing I noticed is the portrayal of the character Elle. The show also mildly follows the storyline of Elle and Tao's romance which makes me happy because for once a trans girl is NOT reduced to just her trans-ness in a show. It has also done justice to asexual and non binary characters which were lesser seen on shows before. And did I mention the soundtracks and playlist which make you feel like you're actually a character on the show. Heartstopper felt different to me. Almost homely. It's like a soothing lullaby to a queer teenager on a sleepless night . The show covers different LGBTQ communities subtly and lives up to its spirit of a teenage coming of age series. It covers a wide range of issues like bullying, homophobia and mental health, intricately weaving them in the storyline.Heartstopper gives hope to queer teens to have a safe space where their existence is normal while also celebrated!
