Being a teenager who has been sheltered for half of her childhood, I often find myself grappling in the strange pre conceived notions of society. The most recent one was accents. How is it that someone’s social status is determined by their accent, why is it that I am not allowed to use any accent any time I want? how is it that we identify who’s right and who’s wrong by their way of speaking?Â
I never understood the way our society discriminates based on someone’s accent or their way of speaking. As a society, why do we treat accents differently, why is it that someone is judged, merely based on their pronunciation of words? Or if someone does try a different accent, why are they made fun of or called wannabes... because what is it that they are trying to be?Â
as liberal as our youth might get, why is it that someone’s status in society is presumed by their accent and why does respect towards them vary with their intonation?Â
form of expression is encouraged in all forms, until someone from your class speaks with a different accent.Â
the same language, same words, same thoughts, same feelings just spoken differently.Â

good pronunciation does not go with a narrow mind.Â
