There isn’t a place in earth that represents lgbtq well. Except Euphoria. Euphoria is a close second.
If i was rue bennett, i would have loved every part of jules. But today, i’m not her, nor will i ever be. Sam levinson, a cis white man, had me hooked onto a show where one of the main characters' representation had me internally fuming. Barely a main, not even a dessert.
Excuse me, for when i say “represent lgbtq well”, i dont mean to say that it did a good job. But i do mean that it did a bloody amazing job convincing us the misrepresentation wasnt there. But Euphoria Season 2, You crazy show who had every teenagers mind wanting a druggie life, yes YOU, your curtains of misrepresentation can be opened - by the same teenagers.
Cal Jacobs and Nate Jacobs - The father son duo who every girl in the euphoria universe at least once thirsted over, had some form of internalized homophobia, despite having queer inclinations. The homophobic homosexuals could barely keep up with their own identity as they proceeded to hate on several other identities. Such a common trope in 21st century shows, and so commonly was it represented in euphoria that it had me screaming at the tv every sunday night.

But for a moment, sit back and think of a person who has absolutely basic stereotypical assumptions of the lgbtq community - Cal Jacobs, a homophobic homosexual whos scared of his own identity has only fed into the “predatory gay man” allegations. Not only has sam levinson now convinced the already close minded man that such is how the lgbtq community might be in real life, but also has convinced the open minded watcher how it isnt really misrepresentation - it’s just how “an abuser” is. Cal Jacobs is not a fan favourite, and neither has the “homophobic homosexual” trope been my favourite. But euphoria is a once-in-a-lifetime show that will make you think, cry, fume, and sigh (a lot). However, if you havent started watching the show, this is your warning - do NOT fall for the misrepresentation.
